Assistant Controller

Dynasil is a manufacturer of instruments, optical components, materials, and coatings as well as a contractor for government funded research. This position is responsible for supporting the CFO in carrying out the responsibilities of the Finance Department. This person completes financial transactions at the corporate level (A/P, reconciliations, budgeting, allocations) and provides administrative support to the corporate team. This individual is a clear thinker who is passionate about accurate reporting, good use of resources, and ethical conduct. Resourceful and energetic, s/he is adept at working with people and providing accurate and timely financial reporting and analysis. As a key member of the headquarters team, this person provides financial expertise to the business units and participates in teaching financial literacy and other training in line with his/her expertise. Overall, this person enjoys a small company position, is comfortable being hands-on and fits the Dynasil pattern of resource conservation, integrity, and achievement.


The successful candidate for this role should possess strong technical knowledge of accounting, strong problem solving skills, and have good communication skills. The candidate should be comfortable working independently while also partnering in a team environment, have the ability to multi task and work on several different program issues concurrently. Highly analytical and detail oriented. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.


This position is based in our Newton, MA corporate headquarters.


Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate and complete financial consolidation and reporting
    • Prepare financial reports for both internal and external audiences
    • Review general ledger accounts and preparing and adjusting journal entries
    • Prepare reports detailing monthly expenses by cost center
  • Coordinate financial execution
    • Establish and maintain financial reporting systems
    • Coordinate working capital management, tax, and accounting for the organization
    • Coordinate internal testing and control reporting
  • Support analysis and integration of acquisitions
  • Provide internal consulting services to Dynasil business units
    • Annual Planning/Budgeting/Forecasting
    • Disciplined business processes
    • Support open book management
  • Support regulatory requirements as needed
    • Support quarterly reviews and annual audit with independent public accounting firm
  • Work with CFO on insurance and banking relationships
  • Complete other projects as required to meet Dynasil key business goals
  • Perform account analysis and reconciliation, including bank statements and intercompany general ledger accounts
  • Assist with internal control evaluations
    • Assist with audit fieldwork for both operational and financial audits
  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Analyze expenses, including comparisons to forecasted results, budgeted results, and trended results.
  • Assist in preparing corporate forecast by business unit.
  • Manage corporate accounts payable. Invoice other locations for intercompany charges.
  • Ad Hoc analyses as needed.
  • Assist the CFO in tracking and maintaining company insurance policies.
  • Perform such other accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as may be required from time to time – quite often on short notice – by the CFO.
  • Adhere to all safety and health rules and regulations associated with this position and as directed by supervisor.

  • BS/BA degree in accounting or finance.
  • Three to five years’ experience managing an accounting function
  • Technical knowledge, deep knowledge of general accounting standards and the standards impacting areas critical to the manufacturing industry (standard costing, revenue recognition, etc.)
  • Fundamental knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Standards (GAAP) and AICPA guidance as they relate to the preparation of financial statements.
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Office applications particularly Microsoft Excel modeling.
  • Experience working in or with small manufacturing companies
  • Strong QuickBooks knowledge
  • Experience working with multiple accounting software systems
  • 3 years of advanced Excel usage
  • Strong technical accounting and literature research abilities
  • CPA and or MBA, government contracting experience is a plus

Work Environment:
This job operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.


Physical Demands:
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


Position type/Expected hours of work:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
