Optical Coating Technology

Dynasil’s EMF (Evaporated Metal Films) provides optical coating solutions for plastic, glass, metal, and ceramic substrates.  EMF also manufactures dental mirrors under the Riofoto brand, reflectors, beam splitters, and infrared optics. EMF was founded in 1936 as the first company in the United States to offer evaporated metal thin film coatings and has been a pioneer in the optical coating industry since.

Throughout the years, EMF has expanded the breadth of their optical coating technology and capacity. In 1987, a 44,000 square foot facility was purpose-built to accommodate a growing customer base in automotive components, display systems, instrumentation, satellite communications, flexible substrates, protective face shields, power cell components, glass, and lighting. An additional 50,000 square foot facility was added in Rochester, NY in 2014 which significantly expanded the large chamber coating capabilities and capacity.

Operational Highlights

  • 26 vacuum coating chambers
  • 40 million square inches of coating capacity
  • Both facilities are ISO 9001:2015 certified

EMF’s commitment to continuous improvement and superior customer service makes them a premier source for custom, hard to find or difficult to manufacture optical coatings. Their new custom-designed DLC Coating Chamber features a unique “coat up” process that eliminates pinholes in infrared optics. It can coat virtually all substrates including Germanium, Silicon, Zinc Selenide, Zinc Sulfide and the Chalcogenides family of glasses.
