Coating Capacity

From our production facility in Massachusetts, and corporate affiliated manufacturing locations in Ithaca and Rochester New York, Optometrics provides innovative thin film coating solutions from a mix of more than 30 vacuum deposition chambers ranging in size from R&D bell jar to 3 meters. Deposition technologies include advanced IAD “hard films,” electron beam, thermal evaporation, as well as proprietary hybrid methods. Capacity exceeds 500,000 ft2 per year.

Coating Capabilities

Dyna-Film Bandpass OEM Filters

The optical coating technology and construction method used to produce Dyna-Film optical bandpass filters enables a low cost alternative to the expensive and often unnecessary use of magnetron sputtered hard films. Very often, Dyna-Film filters provide higher transmission, greater blocking, and similar costs to traditional thermal evaporated coatings, saving the instrument manufacturer money, and enabling higher signal to noise dynamic range.

ION Assisted Deposition

Advanced Ion Assisted thin film deposition (IAD) of refractory oxides provides exceptional environmental durability and enables the design and manufacture of complex coating designs exposed to the atmosphere on a large variety of substrate materials.

Traditional Thin Film Coatings

With a time-proven, viable and economical approach, we produce narrow and broadband optical interference filters with central wavelengths from 330 –1650 nm. We also offer an extensive selection of catalog optical filters, as well as custom sizes and thicknesses.

Metallic Mirror Coatings

vacuum chambersOur broad manufacturing capability and large capacity for metallic mirror coatings allows you to choose the optimum spectral range of reflectivity and durability for both large and small components. Coating materials include Aluminum, Silver and Gold. Protected and enhanced mirror coatings are available as well.

We will coat your substrate material or ours, in large format of up to 2,540 mm diameter, or as small as millimeters on an edge, and in quantities of hundreds of thousands, or just one. Substrate materials we coat include many types of glasses, ceramics, metals, and plastics.

Enhanced Aluminum coatingOur impressive capacity and design versatility is supported by thirty four high vacuum optical thin film deposition chambers. Ranging in size from 450 mm to over 2,500 mm diameter, and able to deposit on substrates up to 2,800 mm long, these coating chambers satisfy the needs of the prototype developer as well as very high volume production levels.

Aluminum Mirror Coatings

We offer several types of aluminum coatings for first and second surface mirrors optimized for use across a broad wavelength range.

  • Aluminum Mirror Coatings suitable for glass, plastic, ceramic, and metal substrates

  • Can be cleaned with water, alcohol or acetone

Aluminum Mirror Durability Guidelines

Aluminum magnesium Fluoride coatingCoating Adhesion: Our Aluminum Mirror coatings show no damage after a 25 mm long strip of cellulose adhesive tape (3M Scotch Brand No. 600 or equivalent) is firmly pressed against the coated surface and then quickly removed.

Hardness: Our Aluminum Mirror coatings show no damage after being subjected to 200-strokes with a cheesecloth pad approximately 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) diameter and 12.7 mm (½ inch) thick. The bearing force shall be 454 g ± 114g (1 pound ± ¼ pound).

Humidity Resistance: Our Aluminum Mirror coatings show no signs of deterioration after exposure to 95% relative humidity at a temperature of 49º C for a period of 24 hours.

Corrosion Resistance: Our Aluminum Mirror coatings show no deterioration after 24 hours of exposure to a salt fog test (5% NaCl by weight in water) at 35º C.

Gold Mirror Coatings

gold coated mirrorsWe offer two types of Gold Mirror Coatings which are ideal for optimizing high reflectance requirements in the near infrared (NIR) and infrared (IR) spectral regions.

  • Our Gold Mirror Coatings meet adhesion, abrasion, temperature and humidity requirements of Mil-M-13508C
  • Our Gold Mirror Coatings are suitable for glass, plastic, nickel-plated aluminum and beryllium substrates
  • We deposit on substrate sizes up to 2,540 mm long
  • We offer a low temperature deposition process which is ideal for heat-sensitive substrates
  • Ion Assisted Deposition (IAD) is available for enhanced durability
  • AuMgF2 is offered for far infrared (FIR) high reflectance requirements at 45º AOI

We offer three types of Silver Mirror Coatings which are ideal for high reflectance applications in the visible (VIS) and infrared (IR) spectral regions.

Laser Protection Coatings

We team with you to provide custom designed Laser Protection Coatings on your specified substrate materials using hard dielectric thin film deposition throughout the retinal hazard region of 400 – 1,400 nm.

Our laser eye, electronic equipment, and sensor protection coatings provide high optical density at very specific wavelengths while maximizing Visible Light Transmission (VLT) for improved visible color recognition.

Various absorptive, reflective, and a hybrid of absorptive and reflective component integration schemes are utilized to provide cost effective laser safety solutions requiring single wavelength, multiple wavelength, and wide spectral band protection on eyeglass lenses, goggles, and windows made from many types of glasses and plastics.
