Cerium Bromoiodide (CBI)

RMD is currently developing Cerium Bromoiodide (CeBr3-xIx or CBI), a new, fast, bright, thin-film scintillator especially useful in applications that require high speed.

Key Features

  • Low cost
  • Ideal scintillation solution for high-speed, high brightness applications
  • Typical size is 40 mm diameter, but is also available in sizes up to 4”× 4” (100 mm x 100 mm)
  • Afterglow following excitation by a 40 kVp X-ray source is 0.03% at 2 ms
  • Decay time for CBI is 31 ns

  • No dopant atom, intrinsic scintillator
  • Fast Ce-based emission
  • High spatial resolution, high brightness, high speed
  • In single crystal form, light yield is ~80,000 photons/MeV implying that 60,000 photons/MeV is achievable in thin films

Properties of CBI Scintillator

Light yield: 50% of Lanex Regular (excited by 40 kVp source)
Emission (tunable): 520 nm
Afterglow: 0.03% at 2 ms
Decay time: <31ns Spatial resolution: >8 lp/mm (for 350 μm thick CBI film)
